Bicommunal teams resume work on Cyprus issue

Joint bicommunal working groups and technical committees, comprising Greek and Turkish Cypriots, continued their work on Tuesday after the Easter break.

UNFICYP Spokesman Jose Diaz told CNA that the groups and the committees’ meetings continued at the UN-controlled Nicosia airport compound, both in the morning and in the afternoon. They will also meet Wednesday, he added.

Asked by CNA if they will be meeting on a daily basis from now on, Diaz said that they decide as they go along how often they are going to meet and when as they assess their work.

On the possibility of creating more groups and committees, Diaz said that “there has always been a possibility for more groups. The representatives of the leaders have said that, but they still haven’t decided. There is a possibility,” he added.

Six working groups and seven technical committees, set up in the context of the March 21 agreement between President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, are meeting to prepare the ground for substantive negotiations between the two leaders.

The leaders also decided to meet again in June to review the work of the committees dealing with various aspects of the Cyprus problem, the results of which will be used to start negotiations under UN auspices leading to a settlement.
