Tyre-slashing thieves stole €10,000 from couple

POLICE yesterday warned people to watch out for thieves who used the ruse of slashing their targets’ car tyres before robbing them.

The warning was issued after thieves stole €10,500 in cash from a parked car outside a Famagusta district hypermarket.

Police said the complaint involved a 37-year-old man and 49-year-old woman who were targeted by thieves working in a pair on Wednesday. Specifically one of the assailants followed the couple to the hypermarket while the second slashed the car’s front right tyre. Realising the vehicle’s tyre was flat the 37-year-old headed off to the nearest petrol station to get it filled with air, while the 49-year-old woman stayed by the car. One of the two assailants then managed to distract the unsuspecting woman’s attention said police, while the second one reached into the car and stole an envelope from it containing the cash and some personal documents belonging to the couple.

Police said the public had to be particularly careful about thieves who targeted people in this way and very often preyed them outside banks, bakeries, hypermarkets and other shops.

“They then offer to help their target to distract their attention and then steal money or other personal property from the car,” said police.

This type of scam had been used in the past, police added.

According to the police announcement people had to be vigilant and more suspicious about protecting access to their car.

Anyone who noticed anything strange or similar to the above incident was called to please contact the nearest police station or the Citizen’s helpline on 1460.
