World economy, climate change affecting tourism

The international financial crisis and climate change are the most important factors affecting tourism, according to data presented by Regional Representative for Europe of the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Eduardo Fayos Sola.

Speaking at a press conference in Nicosia, Fayos Sola said that tourism has already been affected by climate change and that problems were arising in the sectors of development and security.

According to Fayos Sola, Cyprus is among the countries with a traditional tourist product and belongs to the European market, which still holds the lion's share in the international tourism market.

He said the tourists who spend most on holiday are the Germans and that the top tourist destinations are France, Spain, the USA, China and Italy.

Fayos Sola pointed out that countries promoting tourism should seriously take into consideration economic and demographic changes, since the composition of the modern family is changing, along with the age of tourists and their environmental concerns.

Cyprus Tourism Organisation Director General Phoebe Katsouris said Cyprus tourism has entered a new era during the last couple of years, with the updating of the strategic plan for tourism and the stepping updating of its implementation, the strong presence in the European and international arena both in terms of marketing and in terms of sound developmental policies, the cooperation of all stakeholders, and the initiation of pioneering local and regional projects and the earning of European awards for the successful implementation of these projects.

As a result, the Director General of the CTO was elected to chair UNWTO's Commission for Europe for the following two years until the end of 2009.

Cyprus has been an active member of the UNWTO since the 1970s and has been cooperating closely with all the European member countries. It has built valuable contacts and a powerful network both on a national and a personal professional level.
