Hotels’ shameful waster of water

I refer to the many articles being printed daily regarding the chronic water shortages in all areas of Cyprus, and the subsequent cuts that are now in operation.

This morning, I witnessed an act of sheer criminal irresponsibility by a large hotel in Coral Bay. For at least one and half hours, an employee was hosing down the hotel frontage, large driveways and parking areas, water just draining away and wasted, for no apparent gain. And I have no doubt that this is done on a regular basis.

I do not disagree with the government policy to allow hotels to have an unlimited water supply in order to support the tourist industry, but what is astounding is the disgraceful disregard by this hotel of any effort to conserve water in any way, thus abusing the privilege it has been given when other nearby areas such as Kissonerga, and no doubt, very soon, Peyia, are already suffering cuts.

There must be something that can be done by the government and municipalities to stop this terrible wastage of valuable water.

Chris Tosland, Peyia
