Cyprus Internet Directory [ Virtual supermarket sweep ]

Virtual supermarket sweep

If the struggle of supermarket aisles with kids in tow is too much for you, there is now a website that will bring your grocery shopping to your door. ELENI ANTONIOU takes a look

Rewind a few years and many were questioning the success online shopping would have in Cyprus. Shopping is viewed as a social activity after all, teamed with lunch and a cup of coffee at the mall while the kids play.

However, it seems as though busy schedules and stressful daily routines have made way for a flock of websites catering to almost every need, including food! The first online grocery shopping website has opened its virtual window in Cyprus, covering the whole island. Whether it’s a packet of cigarettes you need or enough food to feed a table of ten, CyprusGroceryShop.com is officially here for you, no matter how much you have on your plate.

The website features over 50 categories that include everything you would find in a supermarket. “We knew this was something people would need at some point,” says Maria Thouki, managing director of the website. “Everywhere else in the world this type of online shopping is a huge success and more people are learning that the internet has so much to offer, so why wouldn’t it work here?”

In the UK, online grocery sales have outstripped electronic and gadget-related purchases over the internet for the first time, according to figures released this year. Statistics from the voucher codes website MyVoucherCodes found that online grocery shopping now accounts for 31 per cent of all sales while electronic items make up 25 per cent of sales. Tesco is the most popular online shopping site visited by 44.2 per cent of respondents in the UK.

Cyprus’ virtual supermarket has more or less the same products you see stacked on shelves at real supermarkets including dairy products and meat. Various brands of a single product are also available while prices do not differ in any way. “The price for a six-pack of water is the same as in a supermarket or kiosk,” says Maria. “In fact, I’d say that we’re probably a bit cheaper.” Each product has an item number while the website is easy to navigate and no registration is required.

“All customers have to do is fill in a form with their address and then they’ll be transferred to Paypal to make their payment.” Don’t have a Paypal account? “They can use the one time only payment option.” An option where previous orders are recorded to remind the customer of what he or she has ordered will be available in the future.

The website takes orders 24 hours a day while delivery is made on that day or the next. “It depends on when the customer needs the groceries,” Maria explains. “But there’s no limit to what people can order. If you need something that is one euro, we will deliver it to you.”

Visit the website at www.cyprusgroceryshop.com Delivery hours are from 07:30 until 21:00- Monday to Saturday.
