Christoforos Tornaritis acquitted of all charges

Christoforos Tornaritis has been acquitted of all charges pending against him in Greece in one of the longest court cases that took years to complete. The court has also ordered the authorities to return all the goods that had been confiscated at the time when the police brought the smuggling charges against him.

In 2000, police seized a shipment of goods worth USD 15 mln at the time at the port of Thesaloniki belonging to Tornaritis, claiming that the cigarettes were destined for smuggling. He was sentenced to life in 2006, but then saw the sentence reduced to 9 years imprisonment.

Tornaritis appealed and after four months of deliberations he finally won the unanimous decision of the Appeals court to clear him of all charges. The Appeals Court also ordered the payment of the original amount, plus interest and charges of the confiscated goods, which should amount to USD 35 mln taking into account the depreciation of the dollar since then.

Cyprus investors welcomed the Greek court’s decision by bidding the Lemeco Silvex shares limit up.
