Cypriot MP urges IPU to strengthen national law

The need to strengthen national law, aimed at promoting respect of immigrants’ rights and obligations, was highlighted by Cypriot MP Takis Hatzigeorgiou, in his remarks before the 118th Inter-parliamentary Union, which is taking place in Cape Town, South Africa.

According to an official announcement, speaking on immigrant workers, trafficking, xenophobia and human rights, at the Permanent Committee for “Democracy and Human Rights”, Hatzigeorgiou pointed out that “the principles of democracy, human rights and the rule of law remain the cornerstone of the Inter-parliamentary Union. The respect of those principles, at the international level, is a prerequisite for stability, peace and long-term prosperity of people.”

Hatzigeorgiou also said that “the issues of immigration, trafficking, and xenophobia affect all countries, directly or indirectly”.

He called on members of parliament to support immigration policies, aimed to integrate the legal immigrant workers into the social structures.

“Targeted policies on these issues”, he concluded, “will significantly strengthen efforts internationally to combat xenophobia and trafficking, and will also contribute to the preservation of human dignity, as defined by the General Assembly and Security Council resolutions.”
