E-procurement Now Reality in Cyprus

IT HAS now become mandatory for all government tenders to be submitted to the state online through the Public Procurement Directorate of the Treasury yesterday.

The move has been deemed a great success for the Accountant-general office, which has completed the project in line with the Lisbon Strategy deadline.

“Until recently more than 1,500 businesses from Cyprus and abroad, as well as all state contracting authorities have been registered on the e-procurement system,” said Accountant-general Lazaros Lazarou.

“ In addition, more than 500 real competitions have been proclaimed with great success and positive feedback, both from contracting authorities and economic operators.”

Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis welcomed the system’s mandatory operation. “Technology has a great role to play in increasing productivity and flexibility in the public sector,” he said.

Through the website companies can view open state contracts and can submit tenders online. The system is expected to bring transparency and speed to the public procurement process.

Given the significance of public contracts- as public contracts represent an annual investment of €12.5 billion, the Accountant-general’s office decided that an electronic system would be necessary.

The project cost €2.1 million, some 90 per cent of which was funded by the EU.
