Bitter sweet

Well known local artist George Erotokritos takes up the theme of expectation in his latest exhibition

“Everyone has eaten a ‘poison cherry’ in their life,” says artist Erotokritos, “something that looks nice and sweet but ends up having a bitter taste”. And this is the theme for his latest exhibition, Poison Cherry, ongoing at Nicosia’s Gloria Gallery. “When every brush stroke imprints desire, passion and love, when colours imprint bitter experiences of overwhelming pain, this is when life is born again and I taste the black poisonous cherry. I feel crushed by its taste and I transform pain into a craving and a spirit for life. This is what I offer with my new work”.

Erotokritos’ love of Byzantine culture is obvious through his use of symbols – “the angel, the mermaid and the colour indigo are my identity,” he says. Erotokritos uses wonderful bright colours, gold and maroon, in addition to his trademark indigo. He fills the canvas not only with paint, but layered upon this are veils, vibrant gold stitching, crowns, stamps, sequins, crosses and colourful fabrics forming mosaic patterns.

Travels to the Middle East and places such as India, China, Morocco and Tunisia have inspired him. “From all the countries that I have been to, I am particularly fond of Egypt, I have been there numerous times. I travel the world for inspiration and then come back home and just put everything on the canvas. The poison cherry exhibition took me two years to complete”. Erotokritos also studied hagiography (religious painting) in Mount Athos in Greece and the religious influences of that experience show in his art.

His works are portrayed on old, well-worn wood, embroidered with expensive Eastern fabrics/textiles that he gathered from his travels. “I do not name my creations. Each piece I create is full of great symbolism and it’s up to the audience to search for the deeper meaning behind each piece, and then decide for themselves what they wish to call them.” The tale of Saint George and the dragon continues, as does the theme of mermaids; all enriched with bright colours, beads and inset incantations and spells.

Erotokritos was born in Lambousa, near Kyrenia. He studied in Athens and London. When he finished his studies he went back to Athens to work and study restoration and wood carving. He lives and creates in Limassol with his wife Mayssoun and his eight-year-old daughter Anastasia. He has participated in many exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad. During the course of his artistic career, the well-known Faberg? jewellery selected Erotokritos to design a collection of eggs in 1996. For this, Erotokritos used his characteristic symbols of the angel and the mermaid. He created a unique limited production of two Faberge sets, which comprised twenty individual eggs.

It is worth joining Erotokritos on his latest journey, his travels of dream and fantasy through his bright colours.
