Turkish Cypriot football veterans revisit old home

VETERAN Turkish Cypriot football players who used to play for TOL Limassol, yesterday paid a visit to the seaside town, where they met and played with veteran AEL football players and old friends.

In the morning the veterans paid a visit to Limassol Town Hall, where they were welcomed by Mayor Andreas Christou and the veterans of AEL football team.

“During the 34 years of separation, Limassol has grown and has become big enough to hold all its citizens, both Greek and Turkish Cypriots. We are optimistic that we can have a solution to the Cypriot problem and rebuild our future together,” Christou said, addressing the veteran football teams.

TOL Limassol, a Turkish Cypriot football team, was founded and based in Limassol until the intercommunal troubles broke out. The team’s return to its hometown sparked feelings of nostalgia among its veteran players who shared tales of the old days with their AEL counterparts.

“This is a social and sporting meeting, but with strong political messages,” said Kokos Petrides, representative of AEL’s veterans.

In the afternoon the two teams played a friendly match at Tsireion Stadium.
