Technocrats briefed ahead of bi-communal committee meeting

AROUND 50 technocrats yesterday convened at the Presidential Palace for a briefing by President Demetris Christofias ahead of today’s first ceremonial meeting between Greek and Turkish Cypriots working groups and technical committees.

No statements were made following the meeting which started at 5pm and ended at around 6.40pm and is said to have involved an exchange of opinions among participants.

Thirteen teams from both communities will cover preparatory groundwork ranging from governance to environmental protection work. Six working groups will look at governance and power-sharing, EU matters, Security and guarantees, Territory, Property, and Economic matters. The seven technical committees will examine Crime/Criminal matters, Economic and commercial matters, Cultural heritage, Crisis management, Humanitarian matters, Health, and Environment.

Among those president at the meeting were Toumazos Tselepis, a member of the Cyprus negotiating team in 2003-2004, former Foreign Ministry permanent secretary Sotos Zacheos, and former government spokesman Andreas Mavrommatis.

According to speculation, Tselepis is expected to help co-ordinate the meetings under Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou.

A number of former ministers were also present including Finance Minister Michalis Sarris, Health Ministers Charis Charalambous and Costas Kadis. The latter is expected to participate in the Health and Environment technical committees.

Although former Foreign Minister Erato Kazakou-Markoulli was not at yesterday’s meeting she is expected to have place in the working group on governance and power-sharing.

Former EU negotiator Takis Hadjidemetriou is also expected to have an active role on the working group for EU matters, as is former president George Vassiliou.

Senior Finance Ministry officials including Andreas Trokkos and Andreas Charalambous attended the meeting, as did Central Bank deputy governor George Kyriakou and former Education Service Committee member Andreas Spyridakis.
