Cyprus beats Slovenia in Davis Cup


The aim of the Cypriot national tennis team for 2008, in order to qualify for the Group II of the Europe/Africa Zone for the Davis Cup, was achieved in Group I on Sunday, with Cyprus' 3-2 victory over Slovenia.

Cyprus' next opponent will be Portugal, which beat Tunisia. The games will be held from July 20 to 22.

In Group II, Cyprus will be playing along with Algeria, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Monaco, Morocco, Portugal, Slovenia, South Africa, Tunisia and Ukraine.

In Sunday's first game at the National Tennis Centre in Nicosia, Marcos Baghdatis beat Slovenian Marko Tkalec 3-0 set (6-4, 6-4, 6-4).

In the second game, Cypriot Photos Kallias was beaten 2-0 set (6-1, 6-1) by Slovenian Blaz Kavcic.

After the games, Cyprus' national team, comprising 23-year-old Marcos Baghdatis, 24-year-old Photos Kallias, 20-year-old George Kallis and 24-year-old Lefteris Christou, as well as team leader federal coach Yiannos Hadjigeorgiou, entered the court for the national anthem.

In Saturday's double, Cyprus with Marcos Baghdatis and Photos Kallias beat Slovenia with Luka Gregorc and Grega Zemlza in a four-hour game by 3-2 (7-6, 4-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1).

On Friday, Baghdatis had beaten Kavcic 3-0 (6-4, 6-3, 6-4), while Kallias lost to Tkalec 3-0 set (6-3, 6-3, 6-1).

With Sunday's games, Cyprus beat Slovenia 3-2 and will now play against Tunisia.

In statements to the press, Cyprus Tennis Federation spokesman Neoclis Neocleous congratulated Baghdatis and Hadjigeorgiou. He also congratulated the Slovenian team for fair play and wished every success for the future.

Baghdatis, ranking 14th, said it was a great honour to play for his country and said Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome and Hamburg were his next games, noting that the main aim was Roland Garros.
