Czech premier: Turkey must meet Cyprus obligations

THE CZECH Republic will insist Turkey realises its EU obligations towards Cyprus, the country’s Prime Minister announced yesterday.

Mirek Topol?nek, whose country takes over EU presidency in the first half of 2009, yesterday met with President Demetris Christofias in Nicosia and expressed his readiness to assist in efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Speaking after the meeting, Christofias underlined the traditionally friendly relations between the two countries and informed the media that the two heads of state had discussed the Cyprus problem and what the Czech Republic could do to help.

“I would like to give warm thanks for this help and thank the Prime Minister for his readiness in 2009 to organise something very specific and helpful to efforts to promote a solution to the Cyprus problem,” said Christofias.

He added that he and Topol?nek expressed their will to co-operate in order further to develop the political, cultural and financial relations between the two countries.

During the meeting, Topol?nek analysed his country’s aims for the EU presidency, while Christofias assured him Cyprus would do its best to help ensure the presidency was a success. “It will create a good base on which we can build our presidency for 2012,” said Christofias.

The President also pointed out that in May 2009, it would be 20 years since the first meeting in 1989 between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in Prague, which opened the way to many more.

Describing Cyprus as his “second home” due to his many years of residence here, Topol?nek said he was convinced that many European politicians didn’t really understand the Cyprus problem and its complexities as well as he did.

He praised the recent efforts and initiatives made over the past few weeks, and expressed the belief that it would still be a long time before a final resolution is found.

The Czech premier said his government would insist that Turkey, a candidate country engaged in membership talks with the EU, must implement the additional Protocol of the Ankara Agreement, relating to its obligations towards Cyprus.
