Nurses and government near agreement

NURSING staff and government seem to be heading towards an end to their dispute, not long after nurses warned drastic measures would be taken.

Nurses Union president, George Flourenzos, said the nursing staff’s positions had been accepted during a conference at the Health Ministry. The ministry also committed to implementing an agreement made regarding the staffing of public hospital departments.

Flourenzos re-voiced his concerns over the serious lack of nursing staff in public hospitals and added that even with the 125 graduates form the Nursing Academy, the demands still can’t be met.

Therefore, he continued, it is impossible to create new departments when there are so many shortcomings in the current ones.

However, the news is not so great for private hospitals, tens of which are in danger of closing down due to the lack of nursing staff.

Head of the Private Clinics Association, Achilleas Perdios, yesterday announced that a number of clinics had received written warnings from the Health Ministry over their failure to comply with legislation, which among others provides for the employment of more nurses.

Perdios said the problem was extremely serious, especially seeing that all graduates from the Nursing Academy are being employed in the public sector.

At the same time, he added, public hospitals are taking their most experienced nurses from private clinics.

He described the state’s policy on the issue as unacceptable, adding that there should be at least a two-year extension to the relevant law’s implementation so clinics can respond to it.

Last Thursday, the House Health Committee Chairman said Parliament was close to coming to a conclusion on how long the law should be extended.

Opposition DISY have proposed a two-year extension, while ruling AKEL is in favour of a year’s delay.
