Simple improvements that would improve Cyprus’ image

Sir,

As an owner of a property in Paphos and a regular visitor, I am beginning to wonder what on earth the Cyprus Tourist Organisation is doing with its time and, I would imagine, scarce resources.

It is with pleasure that I see today that they are making some efforts to encourage budget airlines to operate from the airports, although it seems the government will continue to fail to intervene over the extortionate landing charges. However, there are some very simple fixes that they could involve themselves in that would make an instant impact on views of tourists and residents alike.

Firstly, how long will it be before a country that wants to be taken seriously as a tourist spot has something as simple as a decent public transport system operating at a major airport? Paphos airport has insufficient parking and the only transfer method for the independent traveller is a third rate taxi that overcharges for the service. Is it really too difficult to arrange a regular bus service to Paphos town?

Secondly, any unwary visitor that dares to venture into the harbour area, the bus terminus or many other places that attract tourists is constantly hounded by unlicensed, rude and aggressive timeshare touts peddling their scratch cards. I understand that this practice is supposedly illegal, but it seems it is yet another piece of legislation that no one bothers to enforce.

The bad press from water shortages cannot be affected by the CTO, nor can the poor exchange rates affecting us Brits, but an involvement in these two areas could just make a difference.
