Contract signed for the removal of dead animals

THE MAYORS of greater Nicosia yesterday signed a contract with a private company for the disposal or dead animals and birds.

The mayors of Strovolos, Aglandjia, Ayios Dometios, Engomi, and Lakatamia met with Nicosia mayor Eleni Mavrou, sanitation representative, Philipos Petsas and the manager of Sigan Management Ltd Giorgos Travos at noon yesterday to sign the contract. The mayor of Latsia also signed the contract but was not present at the meeting.

EU directive 1774/2002 states that the burying and disposal of dead animals and birds in the environment is strictly prohibited and stipulates that livestock and domestic animal corpses must be incinerated.

As a result, in the interests of public health and cost reduction the seven mayors signed the two year contract with Sigan Management Ltd for the collection and safe disposal of the corpses.

It will be up to the sanitation and waste collection services of each municipality to take the animal remains to a central depot in Strovolos where Sigan will collect and then destroy them.

Sigan will charge the municipalities €29 for every dead dog, €18 for each cat and €8 for any household animal or bird. Here will be an additional daily cost of €27.14 for the route between the collection depot in Strovolos and the incineration point.

The municipalities have not yet decided whether or not the citizens should foot the bill for this service.

Today Sigan will be providing each municipality with special bags in which to place the animal remains before they are removed.

Public Relations officer for Nicosia municipality, Makis Nicolaides, said: “The most important thing is that if anyone sees a dead animal or bird in the roads or in their homes they must call the municipality and report it to the sanitary or waste collection services who are responsible for getting rid of them and bringing them to the central depot for the company to deal with.”.
