CY looks into Dubai debacle

CYPRUS Airways (CY) said yesterday it was looking into the treatment of a group of passengers who were delayed overnight on Sunday in Dubai Airport.

The passengers, many with children, said they were ignored and shunted around Dubai Airport without food or drink for at least eight hours between Sunday night and Monday morning.

They were only taken to a hotel early in the morning

The flight eventually arrived back in Cyprus late on Monday night.

Some of the passengers said they were dismayed over the treatment they received from CY and to a lesser extent the Dubai Airport Authority (DAA), which later apologised and had done the best they could under the circumstances.

CY spokesman Kyriacos Kyriacou yesterday said a letter of complaint had been received on behalf of some of the passengers. “We are investigating this,” he said.

The problem started when the late-night flight could not return to Cyprus due to a technical problem with the aircraft but it was hoped it could be fixed so that the flight could return the same night.

However, at some point, the crew’s mandated maximum flying hours expired and the plane had to be grounded.

It is still not clear what time that was, but it meant that someone knew at some point that the plane would not be flying – and that no one informed the passengers.

Kyriacou said as far as he was aware from the information he had so far, the crew was also still at the airport all night and didn’t go to a hotel until 7am or so. But a full investigation would be carried out, he said.

Kyriacou said he understood the frustrations of the passengers. “There are different reasons why things don’t always go as planned. We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” he said, adding that all passengers would be fully compensated.

The CY spokesman said the airline has only one representative in Dubai, and he was out of town on Sunday. He said CY flights are managed by a ground-handling company in the airport, not by CY staffers, he said.

But one complainant said the ground-handlers could only act with the authority of a CY representative. “In cases like these the ground handlers refer back to the airline,” he said.
