UN envoy upbeat after Athens talks

UN UNDER-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Lynn Pascoe yesterday met Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyiannis in Athens as part of his round of contacts to evaluate the Cyprus issue.

Pascoe, who was on the island last week, will be in Ankara today to continue his talks and from there he will travel to Brussels, a UN spokesman said.

With Bakoyiannis, Pascoe and his team discussed the Cyprus issue and said everyone seemed to agree there was a need to move forward.

“We had very fruitful talks with Ms Bakoyannis about Cyprus. We both agreed that there is a very good chance to proceed and we must find a way to help. We will work together in order for procedures to be accelerated. We will co-operate firmly with Greece, Turkey and all the people in Cyprus to reach a solution,” he said.

He said the UN’s role was to see how it could help.

George Koumoutsakos, the spokesman for the Greek Foreign Ministry, said Bakoyiannis reiterated Greece’s position favouring well-prepared negotiating procedures.

Pascoe said during his visit to Cyprus that there was a “palpable sense of momentum” that he would transmit back to the Secretary General.

He said the two leaders had set their sights on achieving a fair and lasting solution, and that Cypriots should have high expectations.

The UN has been waiting for a sign of good will in Cyprus before attempting to move forward with any new negotiations. Since they met on March 21, President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat agreed the opening of Ledra Street, and started moving on establishing working groups and technical committees to lay the groundwork for new talks.

Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou and Talat’s adviser Ozdil Nami have already agreed to the titles for six working groups and seven technical committees.

They are now in the process of fleshing out the committees, and a list of names for members is ready, Iacovou said yesterday.

Iacovou told the Cyprus Mail the list of names was not going to be published just yet. He said members would come from all spectrums, from politics to the legal profession, but it would be difficult to pinpoint how many people would be on each committee, he said.

“Some of them will rotate among different committees,” Iacovou said.
He also said experts might be called in from time to time by one side or the other, or jointly.

Iacovou said he still hoped the committees and groups would begin work this week.

However, it is understood that the Turkish Cypriot side is having some technical difficulties in finding possible members, other sources said.
