Cypriot and Greek Finance Ministers agree to enhance relations

Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis held a meeting Monday with his Greek counterpart Giorgos Alogoskoufis with whom he discussed ways to further enhance the economic and commercial relations between the two countries.

Stavrakis, who is in Athens to address the ECONOMIST Conference, said that economic and commercial relations between Cyprus and Greece are already very strong but pointed out that ''the main aim is to further strengthen those relations''.

“There are some fields where each country has its own comparative advantages.
Greece, for instance, is stronger in the Balkans”, he said, adding that Cyprus has good relations with Russia and the Ukraine.
Stavrakis said that Cyprus and Greece would look into ways to expand jointly to the aforementioned countries “either with joint ventures or with other ways that will prove to be for the benefit of the Cypriot and the Greek economies”.

“Our cooperation is closed, it will continue and we are convinced that it will yield the best results”, he concluded.
Alogoskoufis pointed out that the Cypriot economy “has in the past few years made remarkable progress” and succeeded in dealing with fiscal problems.

“As a result the Cypriot economy is one of the first among the new EU countries to join the eurozone”, he noted.

He said that Cyprus has a strong economy thanks to the Cypriot governments’ efforts as well as to the efforts made by the people of Cyprus.

Comparing the economies of Cyprus and Greece, the Greek Minister said that they have a lot in common since they both want to strengthen their prospects in the wider region, in Eastern Europe, Southeastern Europe and Eastern Mediterranean”.

Alogoskoufis extended an invitation to his Cypriot counterpart to pay Greece an official visit and accepted Stavrakis’ invitation to visit Cyprus.

The Greek Minister said that in 2008 both visits would take place “with the aim to further enhance our economic relations”, he said.
