Scrapie detected in sheep imported from Romania

A FLOCK of 900 sheep imported from Romania is in quarantine after scrapie was detected in one of the animals.

Veterinary Services, however, assured the public that there should be no concern over the disease’s spread to other animals and that meat can still be consumed safely.

“We received a delivery of livestock from Romania, as well as from other countries – something that is being done on a systematic basis as part of Cyprus’ EU membership,” confirmed Charalambos Kakoyiannis, Director of Veterinary Services.

“From the 900 animals that were imported, we have isolated one animal [that tested positive] after its slaughter and examination for scrapie” he added.

Kakoyiannis also confirmed that the specific herd of animals imported from Romania has placed under restriction, while its culling is under consideration.

“The flock in which the animal with scrapie was traced has been quarantined and we are in communication with the relevant authorities in Romania for all the information from their part on the other animals that came with the [infected animal].

“If the animal is from the same flock, then we will have to kill the entire flock,” he explained.

Veterinary Services clarified that the Agriculture Ministry is handling the issue and that there is no concern over the spread of the disease.

“The Ministry of Agriculture is not worried that the disease will spread to other animals. The disease already exists in Cyprus and one that the Ministry and the Veterinary Services are working hard to control through a two-year EU-backed programme,” Kakoyiannis said.

Earlier this year, the Council of Ministers voted on an action plan that involved the mass culling of flocks that may have been infected in a bid to eradicate the disease from the island.
