Large families say they can’t cope with living costs

THE COST of living is forcing children in large families to either stop or postpone their studies to help their parents out financially because they cannot afford to continue paying student fees and living costs.

They threatened a boycott unless things change.

The president of Large Families Organisation (POP) Paraskevas Samaras told reporters yesterday: “If the government and all the authorities responsible do not proceed to have prices reduced, especially on basic-needs products such as milk, bread, water and electricity then we will stage a boycott until things change”.

Yesterday POP presidents in all districts held news conferences demanding their rights to be heard.

“Large families are the ones who face the biggest problem in an economic crisis,” said Samaras.

“Their unemployment level is also much higher than the rest of the population.”

Samaras said large families paid around €150 a week minimum just for milk and bread.

And now he said large families were facing the problem of leaving their children uneducated as they cannot afford to pay the high tuition in private universities in Cyprus and abroad.

Private lessons for school-going children was also proving to be a problem, Samaras said.

He said despite all this, there was no help from the government compared to the assistance offered in other European countries.

“It should be taken into account that in large families all our needs are multiplied by six, seven or eight,” said Samaras.

He also said house purchasing was a problem and had witnessed families of six living in two-bedroom apartments.

“In order to cope with all of this we need the government on our side”, said Samaras.

POP wants to see a review of child benefit and larger 13th salaries at Christmas, more grants for education and for families with sons in the National Guard, and lower electricity prices. The organisation also wants subsidies for car and home purchases for large families.

“The support of large families from the state can be achieved by the acceleration of implementation of the election promises made by the President of the Republic that will reduce unemployment and help us to breathe financially,” said Samaras.
