Kidnap victim arrested

GEORGOS Ellinas, the 57-year-old Paphos man who was reported missing by his family last week and was apparently released by kidnappers on Monday, was arrested yesterday on suspicion of causing public harm.

Ellinas, a civil servant, went missing just after 2.30pm last Thursday when he finished work. His moped was found abandoned at an open parking lot next to Paphos municipal market, and he was last seen arguing with four individuals.

According to police, after his reappearance the civil servant had told them he had been forced into a car at gunpoint by men he had never seen before. He had also said that his kidnappers had treated him well during his captivity, and had categorically denied that his abduction was in any way related to online gambling or debts to money-lenders.

Investigators are now reported to have taken testimony according to which Ellinas had stayed at a relative’s house from last Saturday until he reappeared in public.

Paphos Deputy Police Chief Andreas Krokos told reporters that according to their latest information Ellinas had been staying with relatives “from at least Saturday morning to Sunday evening”. Ellinas’ relatives may now be charged with conspiracy.

After yesterday’s arrest, Ellinas continued to deny that his disappearance had anything to do with online gambling or debts to loan-sharks.

Paphos CID are continuing their investigation into the alleged kidnap.
