Downer: Limnitis opening is in the leaders’ hands

THE OPENING of the Limnitis checkpoint is an issue that solely concerns the two community leaders, UN special envoy in Cyprus Alexander Downer said yesterday.

Downer was asked to comment on the matter after a 90-minute meeting with President Demetris Christofias, during which he was briefed on the progress made so far in the direct negotiations between the two community leaders.

“I don’t offer any expectations, any comments of expectations,” the UN envoy told reporters. “It’s clearly an issue; it is an issue that is on the minds of the leaders and on the minds of their representatives and for us as the United Nations we do what we can to try to help of course, as is our role. But nothing more than that, from our point of view.

“This is a matter for them to sort out not for us to sort out.” Asked to comment on the “provocative stance” of Turkey when it comes to Cyprus’ plans to explore its coastal area for oil, Downer said neither Christofias nor Talat had ever raised the issue.

He added that it had not yet been decided when the talks would be interrupted fro the summer holidays.

Christofias, meanwhile, expressed his desire to reach an agreement over Limnitis with the Turkish Cypriot side.

“It is my wish and effort,” said the President. “One hundred per cent, from my part at least. But we are awaiting news.”
