Demolition order handed over for ‘toxic’ Latsia factory
THE OWNER of the Astrasol shoe factory in Latsia, blamed for a spike in cancer cases and deaths in the area due to increased toxic emissions, was yesterday served a demolition order.
Latsia Mayor Panayiotis Kyprianou arrived on the scene with the bailiff yesterday. Accompanied by the police, the group entered the factory and informed the owner that the factory will be demolished on June 3.
The news was met with relief by surrounding residents, who yesterday continued to block access to the factory and prevent its operation.
Meanwhile, the Labour Inspection Department yesterday denied claims that the owner had been pre-warned about the various inspections that had been taking place since the factory started operating in 2005.
In an announcement yesterday, the Department claimed it had carried out 12 separate emissions inspections on Astrasol from June 2005 until May 2009, all of which had been executed without the owner being previously informed.
The Department said it had felt the need to set the record state after a spokesman for the area’s residents told the media that there was “an open line of communication” between the state officials and the factory owner. They claimed the owner had been informed before any inspections about when they would be taking place.
“In eight out of 12 inspections by the Department, it was found that the emissions were higher than the legally acceptable limit,” read the announcement.
“If these claims were true, these results wouldn’t have been announced.”
Furthermore, the Department said it was the one that had requested the factory owner’s prosecution from the Attorney-general, as it had found there were exceptionally high chloromethane emissions. It said it had asked the AG to at least temporarily issue an order to stop the factory’s operation until the problem was fixed.
“The Department is saddened by the aforementioned statements because it always operates objectively and seriously, with the only objective being the effective implementation of the law,” it concluded.
In order to set the record straight, Labour Minister Soteroulla Charalambous yesterday asked to be presented with any evidence backing the residents’ claims.
“The vague accusations that are being heard I feel do not help the situation,” said Charalambous, adding that it was the ministry’s department that had brought the matter to court.
“It is based on the Labour Inspection Department’s inspections that an investigation is being carried out that this prosecution is taking place,” she said. But she added that she had asked for the days and times the inspections had been carried out so she could look into the matter herself.
