Parliament approves extension for implentation of law governing private hospitals

PARLIAMENT yesterday approved another two-year extension for the implementation of the law for private hospitals.

This isn’t the first time the specific law has had to be extended; an on-going lack of nursing staff makes it impossible for private clinics to live up to the law’s provisions, which if strictly adhered to, would lead to two thirds of the island’s private hospitals closing down.

Speaking after yesterday’s House Health Committee sitting, committee chairman Eleni Theocharous of DISY said all deputies had agreed on the suspension.

She said nobody was happy with this development, as it meant legislation for the operation of private clinics was not being implemented, “and this is because of the dire need for specialist staff”.

But she added that the decision was made taking into consideration the private sector’s difficulty in employing nursing staff.

Theocharous said she hoped this was the last time an extension was demanded. “We have pointed out two or three points which the system regarding public and private medicine in Cyprus can work on to find solutions as soon as possible.”

Regarding small clinics only in need of one nurse, Theocharous said there was a proposal for there to be a one-year extension on the law’s implementation.

Another short-term solution suggested during yesterday’s meeting was to licence nurses working in public hospitals to become employed in the private sector too, but this and other points will be discussed in detail next week.

The head of the Cyprus Private Hospitals’ Association, Achilleas Perdios, said he had requested an indefinite extension of the law as it couldn’t yet be determined whether the appropriate staff would be found within two years. He hoped however that a further extension would not be needed.
