Arsonists target cars of Agriculture Ministry staff

ARSONISTS set fire to five vehicles of the Agriculture Ministry in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The incident took place at 4am as the cars were parked outside the Ministry in the Ayios Dometios area of Nicosia

Four of the cars were completely destroyed, with extensive damage to the fifth.

Passing motorists noticed the blaze and contacted the Fire Services.

Assistant Director of the Department of Agriculture, Takis Photiou said he was notified around 6am.

''I immediately went to the Ministry where I gave a statement to police and saw that five of the vehicles had been torched,” he said. “I will help the police in any way possible in an effort to assist in the solution of the case as soon as possible.”

Photious added that both the Minister and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry had been notified, with both expressing distress over what had happened.

According to the investigation’s preliminary results the arsonists used small camping gas cylinders, which were placed under the vehicles.

The Ministry is not guarded during the night, with only the main entrance monitored by a surveillance system.

Justice Minister Kypros Chrysostomides said that there is an urgent need to protect government buildings, especially ministries.

Referring to the attacks, he added that, “the time has come to implement such plans as it is unacceptable for government property to remain unprotected.”

He added that he will be speaking with the Chief of Police where extra security of government establishments will be discussed.

The Minister also called for extra policing of government buildings. “Better planning is needed,” he said.
