Stepping up the battle against TB

YESTERDAY was World TB Day, dedicated to people all over the world who are doing their bit to stop tuberculosis, draw attention to the disease ,and how to prevent and cure it.

The theme this year is ‘I am stopping TB’.

This year's World TB Day is about celebrating the lives and stories of people affected by TB; women, men and children who have taken TB treatment; doctors, nurses, researchers, community workers and anyone who has contributed towards the global fight against TB.

Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease usually affecting the lungs (pulmonary TB). Other parts of the body can also be affected, for example lymph nodes, kidneys, bones, joints, etc. (extra pulmonary TB). The symptoms of tuberculosis are coughing sputum or blood, chest pains, weakness, weight loss, fever and night sweats.

World TB Day raises awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis and efforts to eliminate the disease. Tuberculosis is the largest single infectious cause of death among young people and adults in the world, accounting for nearly two million deaths per year.

The annual event on March 24 marks the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch detected the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. This was a first step towards diagnosing and curing tuberculosis. The World Health Organisation (WHO) eHHhhfkgfjskjgk is working to cut TB occurrence rates and deaths in half by 2015.

In Cyprus, although TB control is at satisfactory levels, health authorities are concerned about the risk of immigrants contributing to the spread of the disease.

Since 2003, Cyprus has had between 30 and 42 cases of TB a year, about three quarters of which involved foreign nationals.

Doctors have called for an intensified control of diagnosis and treatment of TB, mainly among immigrants from countries with high levels of the disease.
