AG says police brutality appeal to start Monday

ATTORNEY-GENERAL Petros Clerides said yesterday the Supreme Court appeal process against the decision to acquit 10 police officers accused of beating two students in December 2005 would begin on Monday.

The Republic would be represented by Loukis Loucaides, the AG said.

Clerides said he had reviewed the trial proceedings and that under no circumstances had the prosecution made a mistake in its presentation of the case.

The AG also said the fact that Loucaides had been appointed to handle the appeal in no way meant he had any doubt in state prosecutor Savvas Matsas’ abilities. Matsas prosecuted the case in the criminal court.

Meanwhile the AG said the report in the escape of convicted double rapist and murderer Antonis Prokopiou Kitas would be ready on May 15.

Clerides said the criminal investigators had split the report into two parts: events during Kitas’ six month hospitalisation at Nicosia’s Appollonion hospital and events that took place on the night Kitas escaped from the private medical facility right up until his re-arrest several weeks later.

The Legal Services chief said he would examine the report and make a ruling on whether there was any criminal responsibility to be apportioned.

He refused to divulge any preliminary conclusions the investigators might have reached ahead of the report’s completion date.
